Volusia County Council approves ban on data centers of 50 MW or more
The Volusia County Council on October 20, 2026 approved an ordinance that bans large-scale data centers in unincorporated areas of the county. The ordinance covers data centers with an anticipated monthly peak electrical load of at least 50 MW.
Why it matters. The vote completes the ordinance the Volusia County Council advanced at its first reading on October 6. A Volusia County Council member was reported arguing the county should regulate impacts and evaluate projects on their merits.

Memphis City Council denies data center moratorium on a 6 to 6 vote
The Memphis City Council voted on October 20, 2026 to deny a temporary 12-month moratorium on data centers. The final vote was 6 to 6.
Why it matters. Amber Sherman criticized the Memphis City Council after the vote, asking why members would run for office if they do not want to hear from voters.

Google to cover approximately $600 million in second Entergy Arkansas phase for West Memphis data center
Entergy Arkansas announced a second phase of service for the Google data center campus in West Memphis, Arkansas, on October 19, 2026. Google will cover approximately $600 million in planned investment.
Why it matters. The Google deal takes on power from the Big Island plant after the Arkansas Public Service Commission denied an Entergy request to buy it in early September. The source names no other side.
