NERC stakeholders approve new reliability standards for AI data centers and crypto miners
NERC stakeholders approved new reliability standards for AI data centers, crypto mining facilities and other computational loads, the grid watchdog said on October 15, 2026. The standards now head to the NERC Board of Trustees for a vote, expected in the fourth quarter.
Why it matters. The standards were developed as part of NERC Project 2026-02, and the source says these loads are exposing reliability gaps in both operational and planning time horizons. The source names no other side.

Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman calls a special council meeting to reconsider a data center moratorium
Mayor Mike Coffman on October 15, 2026 called for a special Aurora City Council meeting to reconsider a data center moratorium. The proposal is a potentially indefinite moratorium on accepting data center applications; earlier this year the council rejected a six-month moratorium.
Why it matters. A potentially indefinite moratorium would stop Aurora from accepting data center applications, while Mark Freeman of Vantage Data Centers said, "At the same time, we continue to advance the current site."

Representative Eugene Vindman introduces the Make Data Centers Pay Act to shift data center power costs to operators
Representative Eugene Vindman introduced the Make Data Centers Pay Act. Why it matters. The federal bill would make data centers with electricity demands of at least 20 MW pay the full incremental costs of serving them.
